Turnpike Lane Bus Station, London

Thomasons was responsible for the Civil and Structural engineering of the Turnpike Lane Bus Station project in London.

This involved the redevelopment of an existing bus station, and the demolition of an old cinema on the adjacent site, though the adjoining retail units had to remain in use throughout.

The design presented some interesting engineering problems including the canopy structure which had to be supported on Y shaped stainless steel columns, with a tapering elliptical cross section.

The first floor of the new semi-circular shaped staff building was to be offset from the ground floor by up to two metres. This required the use of cantilever beams at first floor with some of the pad foundations used to resist uplift.
