Cranleigh School, Woodland Arts Workshop

The ‘Woodland Design Workshop’ provides a unique teaching space for woodwork.

It was the clients desire to create a truly green building that provided a stimulating teaching environment. This influenced the project from the locally sourced chestnut poles, harvested and delivered to site still bark covered through to the use of a Bio mass boiler for heat and the highly insulated fabric. The choice of chestnut avoided the need for chemical treatment and further transportation.

To achieve the clear teaching space, frames where designed using the chestnut poles and simple expressed connections in keeping with character of the structure.

This building was short listed for the IStructE - Structural Awards
