Delivering innovative, award-winning civil and structural engineering solutions: Thomasons brings exceptional design to the construction industry

Dean Clough, Halifax

Built in 1858 with a floor area of 9,800m2 over six storeys, this building was part of an integrated mill complex making fine carpets for exporting all over the world. Over 5,000 people were employed on site with many more related jobs elsewhere.

This fire proof mill used cast iron beams supporting brick arched floors. Thomasons were involved with Inspections, Structural Design and Detailing services. This included the design of a new roof structure which maintained support from the existing cast iron columns. A substantial plant room was also provided at roof level.

A detailed survey identified which cast iron beams required strengthening. A special light weight floor replaced the stone flags and rubble fill over the brick arched floor.

Thomasons also provided site attendance to completion as office accommodation.
