Delivering innovative, award-winning civil and structural engineering solutions: Thomasons brings exceptional design to the construction industry

Salts Mill, Saltaire

The centrepiece of the Saltaire World Heritage Site was built by Sir Titus Salt in 1850-3. A six storey spinning mill sixty bays long was constructed using cast iron columns and beams supporting brick arched floors. The iron roof trusses were of a very early type.

Thomasons were involved in sensitive strengthening to the lightweight iron trusses and re-roofing the main mill which is 150 metres long.

Lightweight 'Alreflex' reflective insulation was used to minimise weight and depth of the roof, together with new 'Vitral' double glazed roof lights and high quality lead flashings. New Welsh slate was used throughout.

The main building accommodates art galleries, offices, retail and a restaurant.
