Delivering innovative, award-winning civil and structural engineering solutions: Thomasons brings exceptional design to the construction industry

Waste Transfer Station, Kirkless, Wigan
Thomasons completed a project for the reinstatement of a fire damaged Waste Transfer Station at Kirkless, Wigan.
Fire had ripped through the building with the intensity such that partial collapse of the portal frame structure occurred plus extensive damage to the services.
Thomasons were responsible for the design and fast track reinstatement of the entire building to minimise the business interruption and financial loss to the ongoing running of the operation. Part of the structure was unaffected by the fire and the reinstatement works were phased such that the site could continue to accept domestic waste, recycling materials and civic amenity waste whilst the construction works were ongoing.
A detailed survey assessed the extent of structure that could be salvaged. In some instances the undamaged lower sections of columns were kept in place, with new upper sections spliced on. In other locations hydro-demolition was used to protect foundations where full columns were replaced. These techniques accelerated the programme so that full site operations could be resumed sooner.
