Dunottar School, Surrey

Thomasons was appointed to carry out the civil & structural design for the new sports hall at Dunottar School. Planning restrictions and environmental considerations combined with the sloping nature of the site required the new building to be set as far as possible into the existing site profile. This required the construction of a new retaining wall and bulk excavation as the initial phase of the works.

Curved cellular beams, high tensile tie rods combined with a deep profile structural steel roof deck provided an aesthetically pleasing and economic structure. Close tolerances were required in the construction of the cast in-situ concrete floor to the sports hall. Effective disposal of surface water required the construction of two new large soakaways close to the site.
