Delivering innovative, award-winning civil and structural engineering solutions: Thomasons brings exceptional design to the construction industry

Wrens Nest, Glossop

Wrens Nest Mill in Glossop is a converted warehouse comprising 72 apartments over four floors with a central atrium between the second and fourth floors. There are also four retail units at ground floor level.

In 2007 a fire started in a top floor apartment, then spread across the roof destroying the majority of the fourth floor and half the third floor. Water damage to the remaining floors meant that the complete building required the stripping out of all internal partitions, floating floors and ceilings.

Thomasons was instructed to undertake a damage assessment and provide budget estimates for replacement, taking into account comments and requirements from insurers in relation to prevention measures for potential future incidents.

As a time-saving exercise, the strip-out and re-roofing works were carried out by a local contractor. Once the roofing works were 50% completed, a weatherproof screen was erected across the first and second floors and drying equipment introduced to the lower floors

The contract is ongoing with the main reinstatement works started in March 2008. Thomasons is acting as Contract Administrator throughout the works.
