Cambourne Villages, Cambridgeshire

Cambourne is a £25M new village of over 4,000 housing units together with commercial, retail and community facilities being constructed in South Cambridgeshire.

Thomasons is part of a Partnering Team charged with the design and construction of 325 affordable housing units on behalf of a consortium of Registered Social Landlords.

Part of our work included the development of sustainable drainage techniques funded by the E.U. We introduced porous paving, bio swales (using reed beds to cleanse water of hydrocarbons) and extensive balancing ponds.

Alongside traditional load-bearing masonry houses and flats, both light gauge steel and timber framing has been utilised. The steel framing has been used in a trial of cedar clad low energy houses for Circle 33 Housing Group. It is planned to use volumetric housing and to introduce sustainable urban drainage systems on future sites as well as introducing as many prefabricated components as possible to minimise waste.
