Channon Court, Surbiton

Channon Court was originally constructed as an apartment block with undercroft parking at ground floor level and flats on four floors with flat roof over. Upper floors were only accessible via a central stairway.

Alteration works provide an additional three flats at ground floor level which necessitated new footings and provision of additional parking bays around the perimeter of the site. Within a recess on the front elevation a new lift shaft and pit were constructed to supplement the existing stairway and permit construction of four new flats at a 5th floor level.

Thomasons investigated the load carrying capacity of the existing structure and stability of the RC framework to accept the increased weight and building height.

The 5th floor flats incorporate external balconies beneath cantilevered roof canopies that make best use of the available views and form a strong link to internal accommodation. New brick slip cladding was applied to external elevations to provide a more modern feel to the building as a whole.
