PureGym, Various Locations

Client: PureGym Limited

With over 240 gyms and more than one million members, PureGym is the UK’s leading gym chain and a pioneer of the low cost and high quality 24/7 fitness experience. During PureGym’s rapid expansion over the last decade, Thomasons have provided a wide range of support on dozens of projects, typically involving refurbishment or adaptations to existing buildings.

Most projects involve carrying out load assessments on the existing floors due to potential increases in loading above previous uses, which following an appropriate level of investigation and number crunching, might lead to the design of schemes to strengthen the structure. In some cases, review and adjustment of the activity/equipment layout might lead to a value engineered scheme of reduced or omitted strengthening works.

Acoustic performance and vibration of floors are also key design considerations for gym operators, potentially impacting upon their members and neighbours, especially within historic buildings. We work closely with acoustic consultants to deliver efficient and effective solutions when enhancing the performance of the buildings.

Some projects involve a degree of ‘cutting and carving’ of the existing structure, to provide new stairwells or lift shafts, or infill former openings, to either suit the proposed layout or overcome existing building constraints.  Thomasons would carry out desktop studies and investigations of the existing structure, so that the necessary structural works can be prepared in good time to suit the programme.

Other projects have included the design of new mezzanine floors within existing buildings in order to increase the available floor space for the gym.
