University of Central Lancashire, Preston

Client: University of Central Lancashire

Contractor: Conlon Construction

Value: £6 million

Thomasons has been commissioned by the University of Central Lancashire to provide civil and structural engineering design services for their social spaces development. The project comprises two new buildings on separate sites within the university’s main campus and forms part of the university’s £200m masterplan.

The two new buildings are single storey infill structures, surrounded by several buildings, with adjustments to meet area requirements and address site constraints.

The layout and appearance of each building is such that it must be designed as unbraced and without shear walls. Thus the structure is formed using moment frames in each direction, out of steelwork, with a column and cantilever arrangement set out so that the additional load on to the existing structure is minimised.
