Going for gold: The Alchemist is shortlisted for a Northern Design Award

The Alchemist, a striking new cocktail bar alongside Manchester Ship Canal, has been named as a finalist in the prestigious 2017 Northern Design Awards (commercial build category) for its spectacular design. Thomasons contributed structural design expertise to this landmark building, which opened in September.

Designed by Reid Architects as a ‘visual icon’, the £1.7m building is clad in gold metal and is described as resembling a gigantic golden spacecraft. It is situated in the middle of a bridge connecting Salford Quays to Media City and the elevation overlooking the water is made entirely of glass, offering panoramic views across the water.

The Northern Design Awards bring together designers, retailers and property developers to celebrate the best design in the region. Winners will be announced at a gala award ceremony on Friday 24th November.
