Mackie Mayor wins Refurbishment Project of the Year
After being shortlisted for Commercial Fit-out/Refurbishment Project of the Year alongside six other commercial properties, the historic Mackie Mayor came out on top at the Insider North West Property Awards.
Part of Manchester’s Northern Quarter regeneration, Mackie Mayor is a local legend. Originally opened as a market hall in 1858 it is now a lively and vibrant food market that’s a popular spot among the whole community.
Thomasons’ Heather Mannings and Jane Entwistle, technical directors at our Manchester office, provided structural engineering work on the project, undertaking an initial survey of the building, specifying the repairs to the cast iron frame and assessing the floor capacity for future use.
Commenting on the refurbishment, Jane says: “Our main involvement was with getting the shell back into good shape. At the time, we didn’t know what the end use of the building would be. No matter the purpose of a building, it needs a stable, watertight structure. The result is an eye-catching, large public space that can be adapted for any number of purposes.
“Having visited Mackie Mayor after being involved in the restoration process, it’s wonderful to see it now. All of the work, repainting and fitting out has turned it into a vibrant community space. Not to mention the good food!”
